Just over 220,000 voters had still to register on the electoral roll by Friday evening.
By 5pm on Friday, 3,053,705 people were registered representing 93.2% of those eligible to vote.
The Electoral Enrolment Centre processed some 11,000 enrolment forms during the day, both for people registering to vote for the first time, and those re-enrolling.
National manager Murray Wicks said any eligible voters not yet enrolled could still do so up until midnight.
With post shops closed for the evening, the only way to enrol before midnight was to download a form from elections.org.nz, print it out, sign it, scan it and email or fax it back to the centre.
Mr Wicks says those who have enrolled since the electoral roll was printed a month ago will cast special votes, which will be counted by Wednesday.
