Samoa doctors ponder whether to return to work

09:19 am on 29 November 2005

The president-elect of the Samoa Medical Association, Toleafoa Doctor Viali lameko, says the public needs government doctors.

The association has urged its members to ponder the issue of whether to return to work.

Toleafoa has told the Samoa Observer that the public's support was overwhelming and it has made the association rethink their decisions.

The striking doctors said 18 quit in the past two years, more quit during the strike and 23 resigned to avoid being fired.

Toleafoa said although they were disappointed with how their grievances had been handled by government, the general feeling among members is that they all want to serve the public.

The association met the Council of Churches and Toleafoa said the council members had told him they wanted to be looked after by Samoan government doctors.
