Person suffers serious injuries after falling 10m into lift shaft

A person has been rescued after falling 10 metres down a lift shaft at Auckland's Princes Wharf on Wednesday morning.

A police spokesperson said they were called to the accident, which happened at a workplace, at 10.15am.

"We were notified that a person had fallen down a lift shaft at a construction site on Quay Street."

"They had suffered injuries and were transported to hospital in a serious condition."

A man at the scene told RNZ the person fell into the well that goes under the lift.

"It was quite horrific and lift maintenance and security staff very shaken."

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they were called to the wharf in Auckland central at 10.15am.

Two firetrucks and one specialist rescue team successfully pulled the person out of the lift in a commercial building.

Hato Hone St John said the person was taken to Auckland City Hospital, and is in a serious condition.

WorkSafe has been notified of the incident.
