The family of a young woman murdered in Auckland this week has asked people to direct their aroha through supporting two charities she was involved with.
Lena Zhang Harrap's body was found near a walkway in Mount Albert on Wednesday after she failed to return home after going for a walk.
A man has been charged with murder and sexual violation, and remains in custody after entering no plea.
Harrap's family issued a short statement via police on Friday night saying they were "eternally grateful" for the outpouring they had received.
"We acknowledge that people want to express their grief and love for Lena and our family.
"Lena received great joy, friendship, acceptance and belonging through two amazing charitable organisations; those being Heart Kids NZ and StarJam.
"As such we would ask you to direct your aroha through supporting these two charities, so others may continue to benefit."
The 27-year-old, who had Down Syndrome, was also involved with Idea Services, a support programme for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Polo Aguirre, who works for the organisation, described Harrap as a bubbly, independent woman who was a great example for the disabled community.
Aguirre said her death has shaken their community, and said she was a friend of many.
He said she loved art, painting, film-making, cooking and music.
"She was a great example for the disabled community cause she was so independent and she was willing to try new things, you know she was not scared to try new things."
Harrap was well loved by staff members and her peers, Aguirre said.
