Solomon Islands election set for October 29th

13:56 pm on 7 April 2014

The Solomon Star newspaper is reporting the country will go to the polls on October the 29th.

Although unconfirmed by the government, the paper's sources say unless something drastic happens between now and the October date is certain.

The paper says many expect the Prime Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, to wait until after the current sitting of Parliament to make the announcement.

Voter registration under the Biometric Voter Registration system is due to be concluded on Friday, April the 18th.

A provisional list of voters, subject to revision, is expected to be distributed from June the 5th.

The current House is due to be dissolved on September the 25th, and by law, a national general election must be held within 90 days.

Holding an election on October the 29th would give intending candidates about a month to campaign.
