Four people remain in Waikato hospital following a serious crash on State Highway 3 at Hangatiki.
Emergency services were called to the scene at Waitomo shortly before 6am.
The crash involved a single van carrying eight people.
Two people were understood to be critically hurt, two seriously injured and four to have moderate injuries, police said.
A Waikato Hospital spokesperson said four people involved in the accident were still in hospital in stable condition.
The highway was closed following the accident and motorists were asked to follow posted diversions.
State Highway 3 has now reopened for traffic.
Residents told RNZ the heavy traffic makes the region hazardous, and they had witnessed crashes in the same place before.
