A man has been arrested after entering an Auckland jewellery store armed with a knife.
Inspector Daniel Meade said the attempted aggravated robbery took place at a jewellery store in Westfield Newmarket around 1.20pm on Tuesday.
When the man walked into the store with a knife, a staff member activated the fog cannon alarm, Meade said.
"Police responded quickly and took a person into custody," he said.
"The mall was evacuated as a precaution."
Meade said police were on the scene within minutes and arrested the man.
"The store's staff should be commended for remaining calm throughout the incident and following protocol ensuring no one was injured," he said.
"While incidents like this can have an impact on the victims and the community, we hope this quick arrest will reinforce our commitment to keeping our community safe."
