Chief asks Vanuatu squatters asked to leave

18:22 pm on 20 February 2013

In Vanuatu the North West Efate area Council of Chiefs is calling on illegal squatters to voluntarily leave a former World War Two township, Havanah Harbour.

The council's chair, chief Andrew Popovi, says they are concerned that root crops in the gardens of the custom landowners have been stolen and tension is rising between the local people and the squatters.

Chief Popovi says either the squatters leave quietly or they will be evicted by police.
