New Caledonia's appeal court has lowered the sentences of two supporters of the USTKE union who were jailed after the August clashes in and near Noumea.
According to a report in the local newspaper, one convict has had his six-month jail term cut to four month as the defence argued that the violence was exacerbated by the way the security forces acted during the strike.
In the second case, a young man had his jail term cut by a month to three and was fined 375 US dollars for disguising his face when he clashed with police in St Louis.
In early August, the territory saw the worst clashes in years following protracted protests linked to a long-running strike.
