Similar restrictions were ordered between March and May this year to help the council repair vulnerable wells, and remove chlorine from its water system.

Christchurch City Council said it would require the water restrictions for at least three to four weeks in January - involving about 60,000 homes in central areas.

The council said repairs to 106 wells at 148 water supply bores would have been completed by the end of this month.

About 30 percent of Christchurch's water is now chlorine-free.
