A member of Fiji's Constitutional Offices Commission has resigned following the appointment of the land force commander as the Acting Police Commissioner.
Richard Naidu, a Suva lawyer, says the Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, should consult the Commission before appointments are made, but has not done so.
He says any effective democracy is underpinned by independent public institutions, and he will not act as a rubber stamp.
The police commissioner, Ben Groenewald, resigned last week, citing interference by the military.
The government then appointed land force commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho as the acting police commissioner.
Mr Naidu says the government should have nominated the most senior available police officer.
He says the commission has already been politicised with the government appointing four of its MPs outnumbering the other two members.
He says under the previous constitution, the commission was not comprised of any MPs.
