The Fiji police say packages of cocaine washed ashore on several outer islands were not intended for the country.

The police commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho said investigations so far indicated the drugs were not dumped specifically for the local market.

The Fiji Times reported dozens of parcels containing bars of cocaine had been found in the Yasawas, Lomaiviti and Lau groups in recent weeks.

The police chief was quoted by the paper saying the drugs were dumped out at sea destined for some other place.

He said the police had narrowed down the area and were working with their Australian counterparts on the matter.

He said the drugs may have been dumped almost a year ago and have moved around in the ocean currents.
