Extra police and a large number of gang members were present in the Christchurch District Court this morning, where two men appeared over a fatal stabbing.
Police said Ngaoa Kokaua was stabbed during an altercation at a property on Wainui Street in Riccarton at the weekend.
He died a short time later, after travelling a short distance away by car.
The court was cleared for the appearance via video link from prison of a 31-year-old man charged with Mr Kokaua's murder.
The accused was granted name suppression, as was a 38-year-old charged with assaulting Mr Kokaua with a stick.
Both men have been remanded in custody until their next hearings.
