Police were initially called to a street in Northcote, on the North Shore, just after 3pm following reports of gunshots.

A man fled in a red Holden sedan. A gun was believed to have been thrown out of the car window.

Police said the man was driving extremely recklessly along the city's motorways, weaving in and out of traffic, prompting officers to call off the chase.

A police helicopter monitored the situation as the car clipped a number of other vehicles.

Officers fired at the car, which was eventually stopped in Weymouth, South Auckland.

The man was bitten by a police dog, and was taken to Middlemore Hospital where he remains under guard.

Police said he would face a number of driving and firearms-related charges.
