Netflix to launch in Australia and NZ

06:59 am on 20 November 2014

The world's leading internet-based movie and television subscription service, Netflix, has announced it will launch in Australia and New Zealand in March next year.

The widely anticipated move will provide more competition for the dominant pay TV provider in New Zealand, Sky Network Television, but analysts were not expecting any huge dent in Sky's market share.

Sky had been preparing for such increased competition and last month announced that its own subscription-video-on-demand service, Neon, would launch before the end of the year and be be available for $20 dollars a month.

Netflix has not disclosed what its service would cost.

The managing director at Harbour Asset Management, Andrew Bascand, said he did not believe Netflix offers a significant threat to Sky's much more comprehensive services.
