A man has died and a young girl is in a critical condition after a car crash south of Timaru yesterday.

A 7-year-old girl is in critical condition in Christchurch Hospital, police said.
The crash happened about 3.50pm on State Highway 1 between Sands Road and The Avenue.
Police said three vehicles were involved.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said five ambulances and three helicopters were sent to the scene.
One critically injured woman had been trapped in one of the vehicles.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
