Pledge to focus on Labour Party's core supporters

The man tipped to become the next president of the Labour party says he wants better communication with the party's core support.

Mike Williams is expected to stand down as president this week with the national secretary of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, Andrew Little his likely replacement.

Mr Little says Labour needs to learn from the election result and renew relationships with party members and traditional supporters.

He says fundraising tactics will also have to be addressed, with less of an emphasis placed on donations from big business.

If selected Mr Little's appointment to party president could be made by February next year.
