Motorists in most parts of the country had a free flowing trip home to end the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The Transport Agency says there have been no significant issues with congestion in or out of Wellington and Auckland on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the MetService says the severe thunderstorm watch in place over Nelson has been lifted.
But it says thunderstorms and rain will continue into Sunday evening.
