Several dozen New Zealand army engineers and their support staff have arrived on Niue to complete building restoration work for the government.
The Operation Twilight exercise extends over three weeks and the New Zealand High Commissioner, Ross Ardern, says during that time the soldiers will undertake several building projects.
He says their primary task is to focus on Niue High School.
"Where they will be undertaking some repairs to the Niue High School Hall which is also used as a community hall, and there are also some secondary projects that come along as well - that's repairs to the Niue Primary School, to give it a bit more life before the new school is built and get it through the next cyclone season."
Ross Ardern says the soldiers will also do some work on road barriers, at the Niue hospital and the island's industrial park.
Two months ago a New Zealand soldier on Niue to undertake a scoping exercise for the deployment was sent home in disgrace after causing thousands of dollars of damage at the Matavai Hotel, while drunk.
