The Fire Service will remain at the scene today of a large scrub-fire in Otago which yesterday forced the evacuation of four homes.
The gorse fire near the settlement of Outram burned for much of yesterday, fanned by strong winds and covering about 60 hectares at its peak.
Firefighters monitored the site overnight for hotspots, but rainfall stopped the fire from re-igniting.
Acting principal rural fire officer for Otago, Pete Scarlet, said crews would continue work today to ensure there was no flare-up. People forced to leave their homes yesterday had returned.
The Otago Rural Fire Authority would not comment on how the blaze started, but is investigating the scene.
