Ngāi Te Rangi Iwi chief executive Paora Stanley confirmed that a bus carrying whānau returning from Parliament this afternoon crashed in Sanson.

Mr Stanely said he was heading to support them, and see how he could be of assistance.

He said he was grateful there were no fatalities but some passengers, some of whom were elderly, were quite shaken up.

Police said there were originally thought to be 28 people on board, but this has now be clarified.

They said six people were taken to Palmerston North Hospital with moderate injuries. The remaining thirteen people were taken to Whanganui Hospital with minor injuries.

A St John spokesperson said earlier that one person was in a serious condition.

Fire and Emergency spokesperson Mike Wanoa said a call came in at 2.45pm that the bus was on its roof in a ditch off State Highway 1.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Team will be investigating.
