There are reports a Nauru MP, who was suspended from Parliament in May last year, has been stopped from leaving the island and had his passport confiscated.
Former finance minister Roland Kun, who has been living in Wellington for some time after his Australian wife was refused re-entry to Nauru, had recently travelled back to the island.
He was planning to leave today on a Nauru Airlines but the flight was stopped as officials tried to get Mr Kun off the plane.
The move comes as the Nauru government takes an aggressive approach to protestors outside parliament, campaigning for the suspended MPs to be re-instated.
The protestors say they are needed to ensure scrutiny of the government's actions.
