The chief executive of Internet New Zealand says nothing will stop the introduction of cheaper broadband in a year's time.

The infrastructure company Chorus is taking the Commerce Commission to the High Court over its copper broadband pricing review, in which the Commission ruled that Chorus must slash the price it charges by a half.

These prices are what Chorus can charge internet retailers like Vodafone or Orcon for broadband services over the copper-line phone network. So in theory, the reduction should be passed on to consumers in their bills.

But Chorus chief executive Mark Ratcliffe says suspending dividend payments for a couple of years wouldn't be enough to allow the company to manage its way through its current regulatory fix.

However, Jordan Carter told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report that he believes the appeal will be unsuccessful because Chorus has a very narrow case, and he believes the Commerce Commission interpreted the law correctly.
