A special run off election vote is now underway in American Samoa for a governor and and lt governor for the Territory.

None of the four teams who ran in the November 4 general elections garnered 50% of the vote as required by local election law.

The sitting Governor Togiola Tulafono and Lt Governor Faoa Ipulasi Sunia face a strong challenge from first time candidates in the gubernatorial race Utu Abe Malae and Nua Mailo Saoluaga.

Polling booths opened this morning at 6 and will close at 6 this evening.

Election results should be known by 8 o'clock tonight.

The winners will take office on January 3, 2009.
