Arrest in Argentina over shooting

08:03 am on 1 May 2014

A journalist in Argentina says police there have arrested a man in connection with the death of a New Zealander, but have not been able to charge hi, Radio New Zealand reports.

Nicholas Heyward, 31, was walking in a park in the city of Mendoza when thieves on a motorcycle tried to grab his bag and then shot him when he resisted.

A reporter for an online English language news site in Buenos Aires The Bubble, Adrian Bono, says there was a police raid overnight and a man they believed to have been riding the motorbike used in the shooting was arrested.

Bono told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme police have said witnesses could not positively identify the man as the person who shot Heyward.

He said there is no information about whether or not the man has been released.

Heyward had been travelling on a New Zealand passport, but had been living in Queensland and has family in Adelaide and on the Gold Coast.
