Aratere beset with more faults

20:45 pm on 8 April 2014

Cook Strait ferry Aratere has been plagued by further problems, just as it was about to be re-launched for sea trials to check repairs to one of its propeller.

The ship lost the propeller in Cook Strait after the shaft snapped in two and has been undergoing repairs at a dry dock in Singapore.

But just before its relaunch this week, cracks were discovered in the shafts that turn its rudders.

Operator KiwiRail does not know how long it will take to fix the cracks.

In the meantime, the Stena Allegra will continue to sail Cook Strait. This vessel has experienced its own problems since being brought in as a temporary replacement.
