Police said they were alerted by the Rescue Co-ordination Centre shortly after 5pm yesterday that a personal locator beacon had been activated.

Despite the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter locating the man quickly, he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His body was retrieved this morning by police and members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation using a helicopter.

A rāhui is now in place on the mountain.
