New Zealand's Wellington City Council has become the first municipal body in the country to adopt a formal Pasifika policy analysis tool.

The Kapasa framework as it's known, was developed by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples as a way for government agencies to consider Pacific perspectives when developing policy.

Councillor Brian Dawson said Kapasa gives Wellington a checklist of considerations to ensure new policy takes Pasifika people into account.

He said it is a well designed framework which will benefit the city's Pacific constituency.

"It wasn't the council's initiative. Pacific Advisory Group, with the assistance of the ministry, took the initiative on this one and brought it to us and it was really a bit of a no-brainer for us to go with it. It's actually quite simple for us."
