Solomon Islands police chief says demobilisation of special constables to continue

10:11 am on 15 February 2003

The Solomon Islands police commissioner, William Morrell, says the demobilisation of special constables will continue in Malaita after the process is reviewed.

Earlier reports had suggested the programme would be suspended indefinitely following the assassination in Auki of National Peace Councillor, Sir Frederick Soaki.

Sir Frederick was shot by a masked gunman while dining in the Malaita capital on Monday night.

The demobilisation process is continuing on Guadalcanal and the review of the Malaita operation is expected to begin early next week.
