The Nauru government says it will block access to internet sites that show pornography, particularly those featuring children.
The justice minister, David Adeang, says the government has directed the nation's internet service provider, Digicel, to start blocking such websites.
Mr Adeang says as a nation, Nauru has the right and the ability to promote the values that helped build the country, and these include values that are based on scripture.
He says child pornography is at odds with these values, adding that pornography leads to family breakdowns and a lack of respect towards women.
The minister acknowledged that some people abroad may disagree with the government's decision because many outside of Nauru do not understand Pacific or Nauruan culture.
