Six men have been arrested on the New Caledonian Island of Ouvea for assaulting police.
Two officers were injured, one seriously, when they were attacked at a roadblock in the middle of the island.
The group stoned the officers' vehicle and set it alight.
The confrontation was calmed when by chance off duty officers arrived at the scene.
One of the injured officers was flown to a hospital on the mainland.
The suspects are to be tried later this week.
The roadblock was set up by the group reportedly because they wanted to take revenge over last month's fatal attack on a local man.
