10:16 am on 2 December 2005

The Solomon Islands Minister for Tourism and Culture, has received a petition from about 30 peaceful demonstrators calling on the government to abandon the proposed sale of the old Government House in Honiara to a hotel developer.

When receiving the petition, Trevor Olovae told the petitioners he would not be able to reply to them straight away but will file a report on the petition to the Speaker of Parliament according to Parliament's Standing Orders before replying.

The Government has proposed to sell the old Government House to a hotel developer in Papua New Guinea for US$1.2 million.

The deal has however not been finalised after the developer insisted he must have a casino license to go with the hotel.
