Warning for Mt Taranaki trampers

17:37 pm on 29 November 2010

The Department of Conservation is warning trampers to avoid an area on the coastal side of Mt Taranaki after falling debris sparked reports of a volcanic eruption at the weekend.

DoC area manager Phil Mohi says recent high winds and dry weather has caused grit and debris creating large dust clouds at Pyramid Stream.

Mr Mohi says erosion at the site had been happening for many years but the lack of rain over the past month has made it more noticeable.

Even even though there is no walking track near Pyramid Stream, Mr Mohi advises people to steer clear.
