An estimated 200 people in New Caledonia have marched through Noumea to demand greater social justice and for wealth to be shared more equitably.
They represented about a dozen groups, which call themselves collectives of civil disobedience.
Their banners call for curbs to the high cost of living, a lower cap for rent in social housing and cheaper public transport.
They also called for a 60 percent hike of the basic salaries.
Local television quotes a marcher as saying that it was inadmissible that about 50,000 people lived below the poverty line in a country as rich as New Caledonia.
