A police car has been stolen and crashed in Auckland while officers dealt with an urgent situation.

The patrol car was taken about 1pm on Monday in South Auckland, with the driver speeding as they drove off, police said.

They then crashed into two other cars at the intersection of Great South Road and Alfriston Road in Manurewa.

One person suffered moderate injuries and another minor injuries. Both were helped by paramedics.

Sections of Great South Road and Alfriston Road have been closed. Auckland Transport warned those in the area to use another route as there would be delays for all traffic, including for bus services, until the area was cleared.

Police said the person who stole the car was taken into custody with help from a bystander and charges would be laid.
