The authorities in the Northern Marianas say most overstayers have been working illegally.
US Customs and Border Patrol said of the 1,032 tourists, who had been overstaying, a majority worked for companies, such as the Imperial Pacific Resort contractor MCC International.
The agency gave no breakdown of those who overstayed but our correspondent says most of them are believed to be Chinese tourists.
It said some of the illegal workers had left, but nonetheless, additional consequences should be imposed for anyone that came into the CNMI as a tourist, overstayed and worked illegally.
The agency said tourists who violated their visa conditions by overstaying were removed and the airlines that brought them to the CNMI were responsible for getting them home.
