More police needed in Solomons for poll - RAMSI

09:54 am on 11 November 2014

The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands is defending a decision to bring in extra officers to support local police during next week's elections.

The additional support will see 54 officers from Australia, 32 from New Zealand and about 10 officers from the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Tuvalu.

RAMSI's Special Coordinator Justine Braithwaite says the increase in staff is only a contingency measure as the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force continues its development.

"The bulk of the force has been recruited since the tension era which means you have got about 70 percent of the force's officers still relatively new. I think in that instance it is appropriate for RAMSI given that we are already here to be providing this additional support and I think it has certainly been very much welcomed by the Solomon Islands Government and the police force themselves."
