Survey shows support for North Shore drinking bans

16:35 pm on 19 July 2009

A survey of residents and business owners on Auckland's North Shore suggests 99% support the current bans on night-time drinking in public places.

Of the 181 respondents 70.4% believed the five-year-old bans have been effective in minimising alcohol fuelled problems.

However, many are calling for better enforcement of the rules, which mainly affect coastal areas and parks.

North Shore City Council's environmental protection senior advisor Ian Parker says 87% of respondents believe the current times of the bans - from 10pm during daylight saving and 9pm at other times - are appropriate.

Mr Parker says the police believe the bans have contributed towards a reduction in violence.
