The operation across the district follows complaints about roads being damaged, excessive noise and mess left behind by street racers.

Wellington District Road Policing Manager Inspector Wade Jennings said police knew there were car enthusiasts who socialised without causing problems.

"We will be focusing on the small minority who have little regard for road safety and the communities they are affecting with their behaviour."

Police hoped those affected by the street racing would feel reassured by the operation.

"We intend to continue to target this behaviour and there is more work to do," Jennings said.

As the operations continue, police would not reveal specific details, including the dates the vehicles were impounded nor where they were located.
