Game bird season wraps up this weekend

Hunters wanting to bag a game bird for the dinner table are being urged to make the most of it this weekend, which marks the end of the season.

The upland game season for birds such as quail and pheasant wraps up around the country on 31 August.

The game bird season began on the first weekend of May, but for many species - including mallards and grey ducks - the hunting period was now over.

Fish & Game spokesman Don Rood said upland game birds provided a good end-of-season opportunity for a final hunt.

Mr Rood said this weekend was a great opportunity for game bird hunters to get out in the field with their dog and mates and put some tasty wild food on the table.

He said there were also limited opportunities for two other game bird species - the paradise shelduck and the pukeko - but hunters were urged to carefully read their region's regulations to make sure they were hunting in the correct areas.
