Giro organisers double check on safety

10:41 am on 12 May 2011

Giro D'Italia organisers have pledged to double check the controversial descent where the Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt lost his life two days ago.

The previously unused climb in the Dolomites in northern Italy is partly untarmacked, and riders have expressed concern that part of its 14km descent has no crash barriers, only ski nets.

Weylandt fell on the third stage of the tour, on a stretch of road described by riders as a very technical descent.

Team officials are saying the safety debate surrounding race radios, used by team directors to warn riders of upcoming obstacles and dangers, has intensified following Weylandt's death.

Cycling's world governing body has proposed they should be banned in all races from next year.
