A man charged with murder has been remanded in custody following a stabbing in Nelson.
The 23-year-old appeared in the District Court on Monday afternoon.
Police were called to a property in Nile Street in the central city just before 9pm on Sunday where a 30-year-old man was found dead.
Judge Tony Zohrab granted the accused interim name suppression pending an assessment under the Mental Health Act to assess his fitness to plead and whether a plea of insanity would be appropriate.
Emotions were running high in the public gallery with one woman shouting: "I love you". The defendant kept his head bowed and stayed silent throughout his appearance.
He is due to appear before the High Court on 19 August.
