Fiji's Ministry of Waterways and Environment says it will vigorously monitor compliance on the ban on single use plastic bags.
Its staff are undertaking random spot checks to ensure businesses and consumers are complying with the ban which came into force on January 1st.
The ban applies to the manufacture, sales, supply and distribution of the bags.
Those who contravene the ban face fines and possible prison terms.
Meanwhile the Suva City Council has been handing out eco-bags to create awareness and promote alternate use of single-use plastic bags.
