Police have spoken to a 15-year-old boy in relation to an assault on a Porirua store owner earlier this month.

The teen has been referred to Youth Services.

The assault took place 6 October at the Mighty Dollar Shop on Hartham Place.

Police said at the time one person entered the store and the victim followed him outside before being assaulted.

The victim remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Porirua mayor Anita Baker said the man had been badly assaulted and urged people who knew anything to come forward.

"It's simply not right that in protecting his shop and employees that the owner was subjected to such a degree of callous violence from thugs," Baker said at the time.

The incident had caused considerable concern for retailers in the central city area of Porirua and officers will maintain an increased presence to reassure the community, police said.
