An Auckland port worker is in intensive care after he fell from a container ship.
The Maritime Union says the stevedore was on the bow of a ship docked at the Waitemata Harbour port when the accident happened at about 8pm on Wednesday.
The union's secretary, Russell Mayn, said the man has multiple injuries and is in Auckland City Hospital's intensive care unit.
It's the latest in a string of port accidents, including two fatalities at Lyttelton port late last year.
Mr Mayn said the latest incident highlights its concerns about port safety throughout New Zealand. He said the as pressure comes on workers to increase their productivity, the chances of accidents happening will rise.
A Ports of Auckland spokeswoman said the man was undoing the lashing which secures containers to the ship's deck and it is unclear how he fell.
Maritime New Zealand and Ports of Auckland are investigating.
