Universities in Wellington are campaigning for the regional council to introduce cheaper public transport options for students.
Almost 1000 people have made submissions on the fairer fares campaign website, which will be passed on to the council's Annual Plan consultation.
Wellington is one of the only university cities without a tertiary student discount, and many are forced to pay hundreds of dollars a month in transport fares.
Victoria University Students' Association president Rory Lenihan-Ikin said students were at a disadvantage.
"Wellington is more expensive on public transport than anywhere else in the country,
"So, we're saying that by reducing the cost for students on public transport - like is done around the country and around the world - Wellington can help make tertiary education more accessible to all."
