Police say they will work alongside parents who plan to patrol Kaitaia's streets in a bid to stop teenage violence.
The move comes after a group of youths who had been drinking attacked nine teenage girls from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Rangianiwaniwa in the centre of town on 5 July.
The kura kaupapa then held a hui, which led to parents organising street patrols, which police support.
Senior Sergeant Jeff Ryan told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme that parents will start patrolling the streets wearing high-visibility vests on Friday night.
Mr Ryan said it is a great initiative and he has spoken to the group to ensure they know what they can and can't do. Officers would be available to assist them when they need it.
Mr Ryan said the parents are genuinely committed to tackling the social issues the Far North town is facing.
