Pair charged over Whangarei attack

17:10 pm on 3 December 2014

Two men have appeared in court today after reports of gun shots and an injured man put part of Whangarei in lockdown yesterday afternoon.

Maunu Road was closed for several hours and a man was found in a nearby cul-de-sac with serious, but not gun-related, injuries. He remained in hospital in a serious condition.

In the Whangarei District Court today, a 26-year-old man faced a charge of attempted murder and a 20-year-old man a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police said they believe the incident started with a dispute between parties and escalated into more serious violence.
