Fiji sugar marketing says sugar may need to be imported again next year, if the crop doesn't improve.
The country will import more than 20,000 tonnes of sugar from India this year to make up for a shortfall in production.
The Chief Executive officer of Fiji sugar marketing, Viliame Savou, says next year's crop is estimated to be similar.
"It is a necessity for us to bring in this sugar, of course it will have some implication on out balance of payments as such. There will be a net benefit to the industry because we are importing at the world market price to free up our local production for sale to our EU preferential market."
Viliame Savou says the price of sugar in Fiji can't be raised so the move won't have any impact on consumers.
