Solomon Islands cabinet seeks further information on extradition request

14:17 pm on 21 December 2006

The Solomon Islands acting attorney-general is planning to travel to Australia to discuss a formal request for the extradition of suspended attorney-general, Julian Moti, on child sex charges.

The prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, says cabinet has talked about the issue but a decision on the request won't be made immediately.

Mr Sogavare says the acting attorney-general, Nuatali Tongarutu, hopes to travel to Australia soon to meet her counterpart, the Minister of Justice and the Director of Public Prosecutions, in an attempt to see a way forward.

"There's a lot of other information that the government needs to know about the request and so we would like to get that clear in our mind before we make a substantive response to the request."

Manasseh Sogavare says the whole case against Julian Moti is nonsense.

He says the alleged crime was committed in Vanuatu but Mr Moti travelled in and out of Australia for 10 years and it only became an issue when Solomon Islands appointed him to the post of attorney general.
